Regime first. VIX at 18 and ticking higher over the week, SPY grinding up half a percent but today's internals are ugly under the hood — utilities, REITs, and financials all down more than a percent while tech holds the index up. That's rate-sensitive sectors getting hit, which is exactly the cohort LQD lives inside. A long-dated investment-grade bond ETF is essentially a duration bet, and the tape is telling me duration is being sold. A neutral pin-the-strike calendar on a name where the underlying flow is directional is a setup fighting the regime, not riding it. Second, the candidate itself doesn't earn the right to a position. p_profit reported as 0.00 and EV at $0.00 means the scoring engine has no conviction this structure works — either the model can't price it or the edge genuinely isn't there. I don't open trades where the system itself is telling me it can't find an edge. LQD options also tend to have wide-ish markets despite the liquidity score; calendars are particularly sensitive to fill quality because you're paying a debit on a small absolute price difference between two months. Third, portfolio fit. I already have a put_calendar on IWM opened yesterday. Adding a second calendar — both short near-term vol, both long back-month vol — is doubling the same exposure to a vol-term-structure thesis in a rising-VIX environment. That's the textbook way short-gamma books get hurt: you stack correlated theta trades right as realized vol picks up. My book already has two bear call spreads (TMO, ASML) and a BWB; the marginal trade needs to be additive, not redundant. Worst case is small in dollar terms — $37.56 on $27.7K cash is 0.14%, completely survivable. But survivability isn't the bar. The bar is whether this trade improves the portfolio's risk-adjusted return profile, and a zero-EV, zero-p_profit, regime-fighting, strategy-correlated add does not clear it. Pass. Confidence 88.
