Regime first: VIX 18 and ticking higher over the week, SPY barely positive but today's tape is ugly underneath — utilities, REITs, and financials all down more than 1% while tech holds the index up. That's late-cycle defensive rotation with rising vol, and it's exactly the regime where short-dated short-vol structures get punched in the mouth. We're 14 days past FOMC with 35 to the next one, so the calendar's back month straddles that event — meaning the long leg has Fed-meeting vol baked in while the short leg expires before it. That's not automatically bad for a put calendar, but it changes the vega story and I want to be paid for it. The setup itself: a 740 put calendar on SPY with spot at 737.58 is essentially ATM, which is the right strike construction for a calendar. But the scoring tells me everything I need to know — p_profit 0.00, EV $0.00, capital required $0.00. Those aren't real numbers; that's the pricing/analytics engine failing to return anything usable. I am not opening a $255 max-loss position on a candidate where the model couldn't produce a probability or an EV. That's not conservatism, that's basic hygiene. Worst case is the full $255 debit, roughly 0.9% of cash. Survivable in isolation, sure. But the portfolio is already carrying an IWM put_calendar opened yesterday, plus two bear call spreads (TMO, ASML) and a broken-wing butterfly on WMT. The IWM calendar and this SPY calendar would be heavily correlated — both long back-month vega, both short front-month theta on broad US equity. Stacking a second index calendar in a rising-vol tape when I can't even see the first one's P&L yet is exactly the kind of correlated-book mistake I've watched juniors make. One position, not two. Confidence is high that passing is correct here. I'd need to see real EV and p_profit numbers, a flatter or falling VIX, and ideally the IWM calendar already showing me how the structure behaves in this tape before I'd double up on the theme.
